Holkham Hall - A place close to my heart
There’s something truly magical about Holkham Hall at Christmas. This beautiful Palladian mansion in North Norfolk is special to me all year round, but during the festive season, it feels like stepping into a Christmas card. From its stunning architecture to the twinkling Christmas lights, Holkham never fails to inspire me—and it has a very personal place in my jewellery-making too.
A Little History
Holkham Hall was built in the 18th century by Thomas Coke, the 1st Earl of Leicester, and it’s still owned and loved by the same family today. It’s a masterpiece of Palladian architecture, surrounded by acres of parkland, with the beach just a short stroll away. There’s a timeless beauty about this place that stays with you.
In fact, Holkham inspired my very first beach bangle—the Holkham Bangle. The design came to me after a walk along the soft sand dunes and seeing the gentle waves lapping the shore. That bangle started my whole collection of beach-inspired jewellery, so Holkham is a place I’ll always treasure.
Candlelight Magic
Tomorrow, I’ll be visiting Holkham Hall’s famous Candlelight Tour, and I can’t wait. There’s something so enchanting about wandering through the grand rooms lit by flickering candles. Every year, the decorations are spectacular, and the Christmas tree in the Marble Hall always takes my breath away and makes me feel giddy with Christmas excitement!
It’s a rare chance to see the Hall in such a peaceful, intimate setting and soak up its festive charm. I always leave feeling inspired, with a head full of ideas for future designs as well as how I would like to decorate my own not so palatial home!
Christmas Market Joy
From the 13th to the 15th of December, I’ll be back at Holkham for the annual Christmas Market. This is one of my favourite events of the year. I’ll be nestled in my little wooden cabin, surrounded by the buzz of the market. There’s nothing quite like the atmosphere of Holkham at Christmas—families exploring the stalls, the sound of Nelson's Shantymen in the air, and the warm glow of the Hall in the background.
This year, I’ll have my work experience student, Lexi, joining me on Saturday, which makes the day even more special. It’s lovely to share the excitement of the fair with her and introduce her to all the talented makers and crafters. She is such good company and we always have a giggle and there is usually a bit piece of cake involved!
Finishing Christmas Shopping, the Holkham Way
I also have a little tradition of finishing my Christmas shopping at Holkham. With so many independent businesses gathered in one place, it’s the perfect opportunity to find meaningful, thoughtful gifts. From handmade decorations to locally produced food and drink, there’s something for everyone—and it feels good knowing you’re supporting small businesses with every purchase.
Why Holkham Feels Like Home
Holkham is a place that’s woven into my life and my work. Whether it’s a summer walk along the beach, a springtime stroll through the parkland, or the twinkling magic of Christmas, it always brings a sense of peace and inspiration.
This Christmas, I hope to bring a little of that magic into my jewellery cabin at the fair. If you’re visiting the Hall this festive season, do pop by and say hello—it would be lovely to see you and share in the joy of Holkham at Christmas.
