Cupid and Honey

Cupid and Honey

Valentine’s Day has been celebrated for centuries, wrapped in tales of love, mystery, and a little bit of mischief. Whether you see it as time for a grand romantic gesture or simply a chance to tell someone special how flipping wonderful they are, the history behind 14th February is as fascinating as the traditions it inspires.

Cupid’s Arrows & the Magic of Love

If you picture Valentine’s Day, you probably imagine Cupid—a cherub with a bow and arrow, ready to strike unsuspecting hearts. But this little winged archer has a much deeper story. Cupid, or Eros in Greek mythology, was the son of Venus, the goddess of love. He wasn’t just about romance—his arrows could cause both love and chaos, making people fall madly for each other or pushing them apart. The Romans softened his story, turning him into the playful figure we know today—one whose golden arrows create irresistible love and whose lead-tipped ones (lesser known, but equally important!) could stir indifference.

His role in Valentine’s Day comes from medieval poets who connected his arrows to the idea of love at first sight. The symbolism still lasts, many people joke about being “hit by Cupid’s arrow” when they fall in love. But in truth, love is rarely a single, sudden moment. Like a carefully crafted piece of jewellery, it’s shaped, nurtured, and polished over time.

The Sweet Side of St Valentine

While St Valentine is most famously linked with love, he was also the patron saint of beekeepers (I found that out at a quiz night last week! Its a detail I love because of its connection to sweetness, dedication, and nature. Bees have long been symbols of hard work, community, and love in many cultures. The ancient Romans even believed that bees were messengers of the gods, carrying whispers of divine secrets.

With Valentine’s links to beekeeping, it feels rather fitting to celebrate love with something inspired by nature. My bee jewellery is a quiet nod to these small, determined creatures—tiny golden bees, a reminder that love, like beekeeping, takes patience and care. If you’re looking for a meaningful Valentine’s gift, perhaps a golden busy bee necklace, hoop earrings or stud would be the perfect symbol of devotion.

A Love That Lasts Beyond a Single Day

Valentine’s Day may be just one date on the calendar, but the best gifts are those that carry meaning long after the day has passed. Whether it’s a piece of jewellery that tells a story, a heartfelt note, or simply a moment of kindness, love is something we create, shape, and treasure—much like the art of jewellery making itself.
