The Heart of the Matter
Heart-shaped jewellery has always held a special place in people's hearts. There’s something about its timeless charm that speaks to the deepest emotions—love, care, and connection. As we approach Valentine’s Day, 'Ive been reflecting on why this little shape has come to mean so much and how it weaves into the stories we share through jewellery.
A History of Heart Jewellery
The heart as a symbol of love has a story stretching back centuries. In the Middle Ages, when the idea of romantic love began to flourish, the heart became a way to express devotion. By the 15th century, heart-shaped jewellery was being exchanged as a heartfelt token, a quiet promise of love and loyalty.
In the Victorian era, all jewellery became much more sentimental. Lockets, often heart-shaped, were filled with photographs or locks of hair from loved ones—a tender way to keep someone close, even when apart. Double hearts intertwined became a symbol of two souls united.
Over time, and particularly in the 20th century, heart jewellery became the ultimate emblem of love, especially as Valentine’s Day grew into the celebration we know now. Even so, its beauty lies in its simplicity—a shape that speaks volumes without saying a word.
More Than Romance
Hearts are so much more than a symbol of romantic love. While they’re often thought of as clichéd or overused, their true beauty lies in their versatility. A heart can symbolise other relationships, the bond between a mother and child, the laughter shared with a dear friend, or even a gesture of kindness and self-love. For me, hearts are about all the ways we connect and care for each other.
In my collection of jewellery, I’ve tried to create pieces that reflect these different connections. The Dream Big necklace, cast from a love heart sweet, carries a message of hope and encouragement—a reminder to follow your dreams - I've got more love heart sweets on the way too! My small silver heart earrings are simple and elegant, the keum boo heart earrings and necklace are a magical mix of silver and gold, they’re the perfect way to share a little love, whether for yourself or someone special.
I think heart jewellery is so loved because it’s both familiar and personal. The shape is instantly recognisable, but its meaning is yours to define. When you give a piece of heart jewellery, you’re sharing something precious, a token of affection that carries your own unique sentiment.
Let’s Celebrate Love
This Valentine’s Day, whether you’re treating a partner, a friend, or yourself, I hope you’ll find something in my collection that speaks to the heart of your story. Jewellery has a way of holding the connections we treasure most, and I feel so lucky to play a small part in that.
Here’s to love in all its forms and the little tokens that help us share it.
